Types of Spark Plug Automatic Car
Copper spark plugs

Iridium spark plugs feature an iridium alloy tip, which is much harder and more durable than platinum. They offer the best performance, longevity, and fuel efficiency. Iridium's high melting point allows for the tip size to be much smaller, which improves ignitability and contributes to optimum combustion. These are ideal for high-performance engines, modern vehicles that demand efficient combustion, and those with coil-on-plug ignition systems.
Components of Spark Plug Automatic Car
Terminal. Connects to the ignition system and conducts the high voltage to the central electrode.
Insulator. Insulates the terminal, center shaft and center electrode against high voltage and provides flashover protection. Keeps high voltage from escaping before it gets to the electrode tip.
Resistor. Suppresses ignition noise that is generated during sparking. Helps prevent electrical interference with other electrical components in the vehicle and disruption to radio reception.
Central electrode. Connects to the terminal by an internal wire. Tip is made of copper, nickel, chromium, or other precious metals. The metal carries the high voltage through the spark plug so it can spark when it goes across the small gap between the central electrode and the side electrode.
Ground or side electrode. Located on the side of the metal, it extends into the combustion chamber to create the spark that ignites the fuel.
Hex head. Steel shell where a socket wrench fits for tightening and loosening the plug. Provides electrical ground to cylinder head and transfers heat to the head to help cool the plug.
Gasket. Located between the insulator and the housing, it helps keep combustion gases from escaping.
Ribs. Helps stop voltage from jumping to the hex head.
If necessary, set the gap on the new spark plug before installing it. In the past, it was necessary to use a gapping tool to make sure the gap in the spark plugs was the correct size. Today, spark plugs come pre gapped, eliminating the need for this step most times. You should double check that the gap is correctly set; check your owner's manual to find the distance for the spark plug gap and use a gap gauge or feeler gauge to check the distance.
Seat the new spark plug by hand; turning it clockwise at least two full turns. Once you have the spark plug snug, use the torque wrench with extension and spark plug socket to tighten it turning the plug clockwise. The plug's washer should be pressed against the mounting surface.
Take extra care not to over tighten the plug; you can strip the thread on the head of the engine leading to costly repairs. You must use a torque wrench to torque it to specification (OE service or repair manual).
Replace the spark plug wire boot or ignition coil and wiring connector. It is important you hear the plastic boot click into place, and note that a rubber boot may require a coat of dielectric grease on the inside for easy removal next time.

Why Do My Car's Spark Plugs Wear Out?
They typically wear out when carbon, the main leftover of combustion, builds up over the electrode and causes the spark to misfire.
Reasons for carbon build-up on spark plugs include:
1.A dirty air filter causes less-than-ideal air to enter the combustion chamber.
2.Excessive driving at low speeds, which makes your engine run less efficiently.
3.Too rich of a mixture of air and fuel, which causes inefficient combustion.
4.Dirty fuel injectors, causing dirt to enter the combustion chamber.
5.Idling your vehicle for too long.

The ground electrode is where the electronic arc occurs. Pre-gapped plugs are common, but they aren't always exactly the right size for your engine. You can measure the gap on your plugs using a simple tool. The spark plug gapper is a metal disc that has a beveled edge. The edge ramps to different thicknesses around the edge so you can measure the gap of your spark plug. Labeled like a ruler with .020 to .100 inch measurements, as the beveled edge changes in thickness, you can slide your plug around to determine how it measures.
When measuring, you'll gently slide the arm of the spark plug (on the threaded end) around the edge of the gapper until you feel resistance. Even pre-gapped plugs should be checked to ensure they're accurate for your engine's needs. If you need to adjust the gap of your spark plug, you can use the gapper tool to manipulate the size of the gap by gently pressing the arm of the plug against the gapper to make it smaller. If you need to widen the gap, you can hook the arm of your plug on an inner ring in the gapper tool to give leverage for pulling it open.
Spark Plug Cleaning Methods
As long as the spark plug's center and side electrodes aren't worn and the porcelain insulator isn't cracked, then cleaning it is likely to be successful. Here are three ways you can clean spark plugs and get them firing properly again.
Abrasive cleaning method
Carbon, oil residue, and even fuel can foul a spark plug, preventing the spark from connecting between the electrodes. An abrasive such as sandpaper, a brillo pad, or wire brush can help remove any buildup on the center and side electrodes.
Dry off the spark plugs and wipe any loose or sticky material off with a clean lint-free shop towel. Then, gently work your abrasive material of choice around the electrodes and wipe it clean frequently.
Once you have a bare metal surface again, the cleaning is complete. From there, gap each spark plug to the manufacturer's requirements before installing them.
Blow torch method
A popular method for cleaning fouled spark plugs, particularly gas or oil-fouled plugs, is with a lighter or torch. Because of the extreme heat that can be generated, it isn't always the wisest or most uniform method to clean a spark plug. However, it can and does still work in many cases.
First, wear appropriate gloves to prevent the possibility of burning yourself. Then, grip a spark plug in pliers or something similar to hold it and pass a torch's flame over the electrode. It's best to use the very tip of the flame to concentrate the heat best. Only keep the flame on the spark plug for a couple of seconds or you risk damaging it. Repeat it until the contaminant is dry and burnt away.
Then, let it cool and wipe the electrodes off before installing them in your car.
Using a spark plug cleaning tool
The most precise and effective method for cleaning spark plugs that is also gentle on them is by using a spark plug cleaner tool. A few varieties exist including electric-powered and ultrasonic cleaners, but the most popular is pneumatic. It contains an aggregate such as silica sand inside a cotton bag that gently dries out and busts up contaminants.
Begin by pressing the threaded section of the spark plug into the cleaner, then attach the device to a compressed air hose. Press the button on the device for about three seconds at a time to blast the media inside against the spark plug, then check its condition. Repeat as necessary to clean the deposits off. Blow any dust off with compressed air, then re-install your spark plug.
